For Teachers
You often see the earliest signs. Here is what to watch for and how to help a family take the next step.
Red Flags, Pre-K Through First Grade
- trouble learning nursery rhymes
- difficulty learning and remembering letter names
- cannot recognize letters in their own name
- persistent “baby talk”
- does not notice rhyming patterns
- reading errors unconnected to letter sounds
- does not grasp that words break into sounds
- cannot sound out simple words
- complains reading is hard and avoids it
- family history of reading, spelling, or language difficulty
What It Looks Like in Class
- not joining in rhymes or songs
- struggling to recognize the first letter of their own name
- guessing from the picture or first letter instead of sounding words out
- stalling or seeming anxious at reading time
- spelling the same word differently each time
- a parent mentioning that reading is “a fight” at home
A Simple Decision Rule
Multiple signs, persisting over time, showing up at home and at school, is worth a conversation.
How to Refer, in Three Steps
The Understanding Dyslexia page is a parent-friendly guide to the signs, ready to share with families.
- Step 1Start the conversation with the parent using specific, dated examples.
- Step 2Share a parent-friendly signs and symptoms guide.
- Step 3Connect the family with Megan for a free intro call.

Literacy development often involves multiple areas of expertise. Vero Speech Solutions collaborates with psychologists, educators, occupational therapists, and other professionals to support children with dyslexia, language-based learning differences, and literacy delays.
When Literacy Support May Be Helpful
- Persistent difficulty learning letter names or sounds
- Difficulty with phonological or phonemic awareness
- Reading that remains slow, effortful, or inaccurate
- Persistent spelling difficulties
- Difficulty connecting spoken language and written language
- A noticeable gap between oral language abilities and literacy skills
- Limited progress despite appropriate instruction or intervention
- A family history of dyslexia or literacy difficulties
How We Can Work Together
Vero Speech Solutions provides structured literacy and dyslexia intervention grounded in the language foundations of reading. Services may complement psychological or psychoeducational evaluation, school-based services, speech-language therapy, and other interventions.
Megan welcomes collaboration with a child’s care team and, with appropriate family authorization, can share relevant observations, progress data, and treatment information to support continuity of care.
Collaborative Care & Referrals
When a child’s needs extend beyond speech-language pathology and structured literacy intervention, Megan collaborates with psychologists, occupational therapists, developmental optometrists, physical therapists, educators, and other professionals to support the child and family.
Likewise, professionals are welcome to reach out when they believe a child may benefit from additional literacy or language-based intervention.
Collaborative Care and ReferralsProfessional Consultation & Screening
Screenings and brief consultations are available upon request to help determine whether further literacy or language evaluation may be appropriate.
